24C3

I’m currently in Berlin, visiting 24C3. I haven’t seen any lectures yet, but will be looking forward to Rob’s lecture about the dutch voting computers which should start soon.
I arrived yesterday around 17:00 after a uneventful and quick drive. More updates later this week, as this year there’s even working wifi in the hostel.

Arrival at CCC-Camp 2007

So… Flar, Deckardt and me have arrived at CCC-Camp after a week in Berlin City. The hostel was nice, but the wifi stopped working after wednesday, and we never again got decent internet after that. Also the washing-machine wasn’t working very good, so when we decided to do a laundry run before heading out to ccc-camp we ended up with a pile of wet clothes (but clean).

We left the hostel this morning and after a trip to the local bakery we left for Finowfurt, we got there around 10:40 and then proceeded with a walk around the campsite to pick a suitable location for our tents. We ended up building our tents somewhere between some trees, so we could at least get some shade during the day. After setting up our tents we headed back to the village for a short shopping trip, buying large amounts of water, juice and coke. We also got some Berliner Kindl (beer), but had to conclude that the variant we bought was absolutely disgusting.

I’ve spotted most of the people I knew that were coming and have gotten my bearings as to where to find everything.
It’s luckily cooled down a bit now, after we had some light rain (after a week of very hot and humid weather here in Berlin)

We’ll see what else comes along, so far we haven’t attended any lectures or demo’s yet, but there is more then enough happening around here.

At least I have a decent internet connection again, and i’ve got voip running, you can call me on +49 30 8020858 3662 or sip:3662@camp.eventphone.de

Berlin, day 3

After a walk down ‘unter den linden’ I finally found another good accesspoint, so i can post another update. Yesterday evening I went on a bar-hop-tour with some roommates. We got to the meetingpoint on Hackishermarkt, and there were about 50 people there. We visited 4 different bars and got some shots in between as well. We ended up at a club called h2o where they played dance and r’n’b… I don’t remember too much, as I was quite drunk, and we moved all over the center.
Today I’ve been driving around the city a bit, but haven’t really done anything yet (accept for sleeping very long).

i’m gonna go and enjoy the nice weather some more and try to find some lunch now… It’ll probably mean more bockworst 🙂

Flar and Deckardt should also arrive this afternoon/evening… So i’ll probably head over to the hostel to welcome them later 🙂

Going on vacation: Berlin and CCC-Camp 2007

So, it’s summertime again, time for festivals, hacker-camps and a well-needed vacation. I still have a few days of work to go, but will be leaving for Berlin august 1st. World-Clock berlin I’ll be staying in the Heart Of Gold hostel in the center of Berlin for a week, seeing the sights and partying in this nice city. Later that week I’ll probably hang around and help a bit with the build-up of CCC-Camp and then stay there till Sunday the 12th, because unfortunately I have to be back at work on monday ;(

I know Flar and Deckardt are also in Berlin the week before the Camp, and i’ll meet up with lots more at the Camp (Geck0, Antarez, Buzz, BugBlue, Tla, Elisa, …)

Anyone have any suggestions for places to visit in Berlin, or parties and bars I should visit… This is the first time visiting Berlin that I have a whole week without any other activities, so I plan to make the best of it and see some stuff I didn’t get around to the previous years… comment below 😉

Trip to Berlin — Depeche Mode @ Waldbuhne

So yesterday morning I left for a short trip to Berlin, to go and see Depeche Mode at the Waldbuhne. Starting with a high-speed drive to berlin (and I fear I might have gotten a speeding ticket in Bad Oeynhousen) I arrived at the hotel at about 15:00… after checking in I did a quick visit of Alexanderplatz where the only available parking-places had interesting signs. It was pretty clear the Fifa championship was going on in Germany :). The Waldbuhne was right next to the Olympic Stadium (glockenturm) where the soccer championship was also going on. Quite a queue was forming in front of the gates, and the baggage-checking went really slow (no camera’s and no more then 1/2 liter of soft-drink allowed). We managed to slip in with all our camera’s stuffed down our pants and some social-engineering/distraction techniques and proceded down to the arena for some almost front-row places. While waiting the almost 2 hours for the pre-show to begin we met some very friendly people and had a couple of very expensive beers (5 euro’s for 0.3 liters) in Depeche Mode cups. The opening act consisted of Goldfrapp, and while I really like Goldfrapp, this didn’t ring any bells, there was no singer, just two guys with powerbooks . They did manage to mix some Depeche Mode sounds into their tunes, but it’s not the Goldfrapp I know and like . After 30 minutes of this the well-known pre-show mix started again, and we knew we were in for a 45 minute wait for the main show to start. It actually took even longer this time, as the pre-show mix just looped and started playing again for a few minutes before the band actually got on stage. The concert itself was great, as usual, with all the favorites coming by. The setlist was slightly different, and shorter it seems, compared to the concert at Ahoy.

Depeche Mode Open Air — Berlin 2006

N invited me to Depeche Mode’s Open Air concert in the Berliner Waldbuhne this wednesday, which I gladly accepted. So after arranging 2 days off from work I could confirm and make all the required arrangments. The concert will be given on a beautiful location (google-maps) just outside of the center of Berlin. I’m currently trying to book a room in my usual Berlin hotel, lets hope they have some available.

I might as well visit some shops before I leave there… must make a wish-list 😉

Update june 27: Ok… everything is arranged, i’m leaving tomorrow morning which should give me enough time to drive to Berlin, check into my hotel, fix some food and then drive back out of the city towards the stadium. Thursday I plan to do some shopping… not sure yet where exactly, at the very least at Alexanderplz or Hackischer Markt.
