Koninginnenach & World Of Warcraft party

So Vegana and Fem invited Aradion, Wyrdrune, Habbie, Liessa and me over for a weekend-long world-of-warcraft party and a visit to the Koninginnenach in The Hague. Friday evening we all went to Vegana’s place, and built-up the lan. We played some wow for a few hours and then went into the city-center to get some drinks, join the fun and watch Vive la Fete. Response to Shelley The Republican — Linux Threat to our Computers

In this posting i’ll write my response to the article written by Tristan Shuddery and posted on http://shelleytherepublican.com/2006/04/linux-european-threat-to-our-computers.html

The original article by Tristan is blockquoted, my responses are below his paragraphs.

Like most things that are worth owning, Computers are an American invention. Look at any modern computer and you will see that the whole thing is the product of American brilliance.

AFFF: Dragon Head (Doragon Heddo) (2003)

Yesterday at Calypso Amsterdam they were showing this manga-based movie. It tells the story of a couple of middle-school students from Tokyo who on their way back from a schooltrip get into what at first seems like a train accident. There are only 4 survivors of the initial crash, of which the story follows Teru and Ako. The first 20-30 minutes of the movie is spent in the collapsed train-tunnel and the train, with occasional short flashbacks and memories of the students from the moments just before the crash. But what caused the crash, is it only just a train-crash, or is something more going on.

RRDtool++

rrdtool graph showing a nice growth ;) Without getting into too much detail, it seems the number of users is going nicely. 50% growth in less then 5 months, and all monitoring and statistics are still going stong it seems.

Interesting article (though somewhat old) about copyrights and derived works

Slate published this article about copyrights (by Tim Wu, who is a professor at Columbia Law School and co-author of Who Controls the Internet? ) in respect to the Harry Potter / Tanya Grotter case. Even though it’s almost 3 years old, it’s still a very interesting and enlightning read.

In the end, few people are likely to mistake Tanya Grotter for Harry Potter; it is akin to mistaking Burger King for McDonald’s. The international copyright system is justified in preventing the most basic forms of piracy. But it doesn’t need to stop works like Tanya Grotter. The original Harry Potter is good enough to compete with its foreign cousins. So let a hundred Harrys bloom and let a hundred schools of magic contend.

Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival 2006

This week was/is the 2006 edition of the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival. This saturday I went to see Confederate States of America (imdb) with Willow in the tiny theather UitKijk. C.S.A is currently the highest rated movie :). It is portrayed as a documentary about the history of the Confederate States of America, made by the britisch, showed on the American TV. You get to see the documentary intermixed with news announcements, advertisements and program announcements, just like you were watching TV, only it is set in a world where the southern states have won the civil war. It has a very interesting view on the world as it could have been with some subtle changes throughout history, and is it all that much different in the end?

Vive la Fete — P60 — Amstelveen

This evening I went to Vive la Fete, who were playing in P60 in Amstelveen. I went there with Bart and Earle and we all had a really great time, the music was good, the location was great, the people were nice and the band had a good set-list. Earle even got lucky, as Danny Mommens (Guitar) offered him a beer from the stage, and was later also invited on-stage to play guitar in the ending song. When leaving the stage he also hugged Els (Vocals)… which made him quite famous for the next hour ;). After the gig we had a chat with the bass player, and we’re going to see them again next week, when they’re playing in the Koninginnenach in Den Haag. I’ll add a copy of the setlist I grabbed off stage here later, and Earle’s pictures are really great.

The Zutons — Why won’t you give me your love

What can I do, what can I say
to make you want me more
To have your love and share your highs
That’s all I’m asking for,
I’ve been around the block so many times
And I need a place to stop

I only want whats right for you
And you could be right for us
I hear the same thing all the time
And you know that I don’t care
well I don’t like the way your hanging around
And I sure don’t like your hair

Ooo oooh
Why won’t you give me your love?
Ooo oooh
Why won’t you give me your love?

I chain you up, I make you mine,
I keep you locked downstairs
with all the bugs, and all the gnats.
I’ll feed you rodent hair.
I’ll keep you in my celler safe
And I’ll keep you there ’till dawn
I’ll wait until the sun comes up
Then I’ll poke and prod you more
I know your tired and your having a date,
but that don’t mean much to me
And when I see you out in town
I’m gonna hide so you can’t see

Ooo oooh
Why wont you give me your love?
Ooo oooh
Why wont you give me tour love?

Why wont you give me your love,
Why wont you give me your love,
Why wont you give me your love,
Why wont you give me your love (give me your love)
Why wont you give me your love (give me your love)
Why wont you give me your love?
